The things I do

There’s a reason
why I make
my echinacea
& elderberry tea
after dark

The plants feel nice
inside me extracted
the honey of course
that’s a give in

The warmth is soothing
even in the summertime
it makes me want to
smoke more hash

But no it’s neither those
nor the taste
nor the ritual of making it
just right each time

It’s not even the subtle
apothecary & mushy berry smell
it wafts in my face as I play
strange tunes while I wait

I can use the cuff of my sleeve
from my hoody to suppress
the strings in these spots
make it cry like a broken sitar

So it isn’t that either
nor is it the way they strengthen
our defense against sickness
infection & fuckery
& since we’re running out
of things it could be
I’m sure you must be guessing

It’s a large blue mug
too big to be drinking
before going to sleep
which makes it the perfect size

I’ll wake up in the middle of the neon
night with the need to take the hugest
piss I’ll be god damn amazed by it all
but more importantly I’ll remember

The subtle details saturated
by the side effects of my redeye
where I was
what was happening
I would have forgot
all about what
that feels like

I’ll close my eyes & light
that little fire
I’ll taste it
melting into the bed
like marshmallow & leather
blueberries & pine

June

We started dreading
Our hair right around
The same time
Even though your roommate
Who was also your best friend
& like an overbearing older
Sister to you said we
Were ruining our hair
Yours always smelled
So amazing from the lush
Soap you’d feel out of place
Traversing through a mall
To get to & was
A little more reddish
Mine were basically just
These nasty lint magnets
That took six hours to dry
I’d tie them back like a hippie ninja
Or up like a pineapple
I’m not a tits man per se
But yours were huge
& beautiful, you were never
Skinny like me
We used to drink
Lip puckering teas outside
Your little bungalow
In St. Pete
The cicadas twisting in the willows
Above the air conditioners
Turning on & off
The same way
They’d eventually disappear
I used way too much vinegar
The first time
It was gross
It always was
Vanilla reminiscent tannins
With an acetic bite
At the back of the throat
Enough to turn the walls
Of your stomach into leather
We threw up in the bush
I went first, I drank the most
Not knowing what to expect
We lit a fire & forgot
About us by it
It was heavy
It was calm
Knowing where cathedrals come from
You had to almost carry me back
To your bed, it was probably
My favorite one of them all

       Spherical
steel cage
    on a chain
you hold
       what holds
me here
    surfacing
depleted
       for a vortex
of honey
    at midnight
condensation
        forms
between this
    and a few moths
the new moon
       is near
no matter what
    it’s swirskii
’cause fear
       eats the
one thing
     you came
here for
        on a wing
of silk
     on a wind
thru an open
        window

There’s a reason
why I listen
to Ali Akbar Khan
until it’s dawn.

I pulled it out of my puzzle box
and tasted it
bitter and beautiful
just to see the moon shine
again.

I’ll be brewing tea
all day tomorrow
pondering what move to make next
on the chess board of my soul.

How could it have come to this?
I can’t believe my eyes.
It will never be so simple
again.

We embrace
each other
and the moment
because we can.
